Week 15 Blog Post

Part A:
After reading the instructor and peer review comments on my final webtext I plan on:

  • Adding images that enhance the content of my webtext
  • Integrating my field research to my webtext
  • Running a spell-check over my final webtext
  • Looking over the correct APA format guidelines
Overall, both the instructor and the peer review comments helped my see what I was missing and also what I needed to fix in order to make my final webtext the best it can possibly be.

Part B:
During English 105 I have learned some helpful computer skills that can be used
in other classes I have to take throughout college.

For example, I thought the slideshow was a great way to enhance what I was writing using words into something an audience can visibly see and possibly even get a better understanding for.

I am familiar with Windows Movie Maker program, however I never used it myself. I found that it was fairly simple and easy to use.

I could use that program in other classes that I have to take during college. I think Windows Movie Maker is a fun and creative way to grab your audience's attention.

I also learned how much Google has to offer. In the professional world, I can use Google to help send emails, create groups to discuss a specific topic, organize my day by using the calendar app, and much more.

Overall, I thought this class was a very good learning experience, not only in regards of English, but also to the internet and computer.

- I plan on using these three appeals to enhance my content and make sure I come off as a reliable source.

Week 12 Blog Post

My Group
-I feel that my group is progressing pretty well with the webzine. Even through one of my group members was not present on Monday, I feel like that class helped a lot. We got a better understanding on what each member was going to be writing about.
-My only concern with my group is when we can meet. I know we are all very busy with other class, work, and other personal issues. We all agree that it is very important to meet, but the problem is finding days when we are all free.
-I feel that my group is working well together. We all get along and try to help each other achieve the goal, which is to do well on the webzine and the other class assignments.
-The "survivor" clause is not a worry in my group. I feel that all the members are reliable and will get their work done on the proper days.

Instructor Comments
-I did not post my slideshow script to my google site yet, so the instructor was unable to make comments about it. However, I appreciated how she sent all the requirements that everyone needs for the slideshow script.
-My instructor comments helped me to remember that I need a "for more information" section.
-Overall her comments, that she could give to my slideshow, were helpful and a good reminder of what I need to have done.

Blog 11

Questions about my assignments

  • Do I need more of these (researched facts and statistics, examples, and expert opinions) to support my idea?
    • I think it would be helpful if I added more statistics throughout my writing.

  • Would another example help me make my point more clear?
    • I personally think my points are clear but I don't think it would hurt by adding a few more examples to make sure all of my points are clear.

  • Have I identified or introduced all the experts to my readers?
    • I have cited all of my sources, but I think I did a poor job introducing my experts. I should explain a little bit to my readers why they are experts.

  • Have I effectively used statistics in comparison with other statistics?
    • No, I have not. I am having a hard time finding statistics so my writing is severely lacking statistics.

  • Do any of my terms need to be defined for my readers?
    • No. I do not use any technical terms and if I do, I defined them already.

Other questions

  • Does each section of my Webtext have a topic sentence or have I only listed the information?
    • Each section has a topic sentence.

  • Have I explained the significance of any lists I do offer?
    • I did not use any lists in my webtext.

Visuals in my webtext

  • Have I created a caption for each of the visuals in my written text and does that caption suggest a relationship between its content and my topic?
    • Yes I did do that for all of my visuals I used.

  • Have I explained all the charts/graphs/images I use to my audience?
    • No. I honestly did not even mention my pictures. I should have mentioned the significance of each one.

  • Have I discussed their significance to my main point or the point of the section?
    • No I did not. I should defiantly do this next time.

Overall structure of webtext

  • Do I need a more effective introduction that leads my reader into my main point?
    • No. I believe that I did a good job explaining my main point in my introduction.

  • Have I effectively broken up my text with appropriate headings reflecting the content of each?
    • Yes. I made sure to break up my text so the reader does not get bored with long paragraphs.

  • Are my anchor texts leading the reader to additional, meaningful information?
    • Yes, all of my anchor texts lead to information that relates to my content and enhances it.

  • Have I created anchor texts for any definitions I think are necessary?
    • Yes I did.

  • Have I written a conclusion that does more than summarize my webtext by offering my readers some reflection on the topic and a call to action?
    • Yes. I mention in my conclusion that the readers should not "judge a book by its cover" and try their best to not add in their opinions when it is not necessary.

  • Have I given my readers enough secondary sources, recommended readings and such, to help them find additional information on my topic?
    • Yes I did. I gave them a link to a video and a website to help them find additional information about my topic.

Research Protocol

1. For the research protocol, I will be watching an interview from The Tyra Show. In this interview Tyra Banks is interviewing Alana Love, a prostitute at the Bunny Ranch who is six months pregnant.
2. I will be observing the interview and also reading quotes from the episode online. There is a website online where you can watch the full length episodes of The Tyra Show. Banks is holding the interview at her (former) studio where she filmed her daytime talk show.
3. I am doing this observation in hopes of educating myself and also get a better understanding of why pregnant women enter the sex industry. I chose to watch this interview rather than conduct my own interview because I feel like Tyra Banks has much more expert power over me. Also, this interview hits my topic right on the head and covers all of the information I hope to get across to others. Banks does a great job of getting her point across and also makes you think about things you never thought of before. She asks great questions to achieve this.
4. I will conduct this observation by watching the full length interview online. Like I stated earlier, there is a website that is dedicated to The Tyra Show. On the website there is a list of every episode based on the season. Also, there are links that lead you to watch the full length episodes online.
5. I hope to learn, or at least get a better understanding of why these women chose this type of work while they are pregnant. I would like to learn what her family thinks of Alana's career choice and if they are giving her their support. I would also like to know what the father of Alana's daughter thinks about this situation. Finally, I would like to know if Alana plans to continue working at the Bunny Ranch after she gives birth to her daughter.

Week 4 Blog Post

Article 1
  • Pardeshi, G. (2006 ). Child rearing practices amongst brothel based commercial sex workers. Indian Journal of Medical Sciences, 60(7), 288-295. Retrieved from https://mail-attachment.googleusercontent.com/attachment/u/0/?ui=2&ik=fe4838ee66&view=att&th=135a66b62a535b39&attid=0.1&disp=inline&safe=1&zw&saduie=AG9B_P-qNO64vlBeUV8t3EVh08R9&sadet=1330485482160&sads=THZsfqlKXfVpBSGwc6NDe-O8zwU&sadssc=1
  • This article discusses women that are living in brothels who also have children. The author interviewed these women and asked questions such as; why they decided to have children while working in the sex business, why they decided to enter in this business, and if they have family support. I personally liked this article because it made me see this situation in the view of the mothers. It made me realize that these mothers are just like any other mother I know. They love their children and would do anything for them and they just want what is best for their children. This article is filled with valuable information that I plan on using in my webtext.
  • This article was written by a very credible source; Indian Journal of Medical Sciences. This article is only 6 years old. The information in this article has not changed very much and is still considered to be accurate.

Article 2
  • Sloss, C. M., & Harper, G. W. (2004 ). When street sex workers are mothers. Archives of Sexual Behavior, 33(4), 329-341. Retrieved from http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&AN=13825659&site=ehost-live
  • This article talks to women who are "street prostitutes" and also mothers. The women answer questions about their safety and children. I personally liked this article because it was an easy read and it made me get a better understanding on how these women feel not only about their children, but about themselves as well.
  • This article is a credible source because it was found on a database rather than just on google. The authors do research to find this information. The article was written within the last 10 years. Also, the information found was very accurate and the findings have not changed very much since then.
